LVMEN - MONDO [2006]

"Long and groovy songs where Lvmen, from Czech Republic, build dark, monumental sound walls and tear them down with atmospheric instrumental fields. Teasing keyboards, captivating screaming vocal and sampled sequences from 60’s movies (mostly from famous film of czech director Frantisek Vlacil - Marketa Lazarova, which became a band’s trademark.) That all is tied together by an astonishing drummer. Brutal music blending the apocalypse of Neurosis, math-metal of Isis, desperation of Swans and nervousness of Slint’ “Spiderland” album" LAST.FM

ICE - UNDER THE SKIN [1993]

"Right from the opening notes, it's pretty clear who's in Ice and what they're up to. The music has the same combination of aggressive guitar, dry, steady beats, cryptic vocals, and more that made up so much of Martin and Broadrick's music in the early '90s. Even the artwork -- fetuses, guns, and mirror images -- and the length of the album (nearly a full CD's worth) all make it clear who is involved. But if there are no outright surprises on Under the Skin for those well-steeped in Martin and Broadrick and company's anti-commercial aesthetic, it's still a treat for said listeners, if not something many who weren't already fans would tolerate. God's Consumed is the best immediate comparison point for Under the Skin, though certainly Godflesh at their most distanced but vicious, as on "Pure II," also has an understandable influence. Martin's inimitable singing approach -- howled vocals then heavily and totally echoed into the oblivion -- defines the songs as much as Broadrick's blasting feedback, but credit as well to the Cochrane/Jobbagy rhythm section, who pound and grind with equally obsessive focus. Martin's sax work crops up on a number of tracks as well, his free jazz love finding some truly extreme places to hang out in. There are some moments where the band lives up to its name and chills down dramatically: "Out of Focus," which emphasizes the silence between the beats and sometimes soft (!) guitar chimes as much as the music itself, and, to a lesser extent, "Implosion," with moaning electronic howls and drones chasing more tenor sax parts around the mix. Otherwise, it's pretty much one massive grind and bash after another, manna from heaven for believers and pure torture for most everyone else." AMG

"Magazine were an influential British post punk band founded in 1977 by former Buzzcocks singer Howard Devoto and guitarist John McGeoch. The other members of the band’s classic lineup included bassist Barry Adamson, keyboardist Dave Formula, and drummer John Doyle. The band burst onto the scene with the single Shot by Both Sides and released five albums before disbanding in 1981. In 2009 the band resurfaced for half a dozen life performances in the UK, with Noko (who collaborated with Devoto in the late 80s in Luxuria) filling the position of guitarist. SWANS - COP [1984]

"Crawling out of the same noisy, arty New York underground that sired Sonic Youth and Lydia Lunch, Swans created a dark, abrasive, murky, slowed-down noise rock that served as a starting point for their ruminations about alienation, depression, depravity, and the disturbing side of human nature. Singers Michael Gira and Jarboe have been the group's only constants over the years; Gira has taken the group from its early confrontational shock tactics to a more varied, mature attack. The band first appeared on record in 1982 with a self-titled EP, and these early releases document their search for the musical vocabulary to express their ideas effectively. Female singer Jarboe joined the group for 1986's Holy Money and brought a gentler, more relaxed dimension to Swans' sound. The band entered its creative peak with 1987's Children of God and the follow-up, Feel Good Now, and secured a deal with MCA through a cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," which became an indie hit in the U.K. In between releases, Gira and Jarboe recorded with their side project, Skin, an outlet for their quieter, more reflective side. Their first MCA album, The Burning World, came the closest to mainstream rock of anything they had done up to that point, and 1991's White Light From the Mouth of Infinity continued that trend. In 1995, Gira published a book, The Consumer and Other Stories, through Henry Rollins' publishing house; the book's release coincided with that of the album The Great Annihilator. " AMG

CODEINE - BARELY REAL [1992]

"A six-song EP that appeared between the two albums proper, without sharing any songs with either, Barely Real essentially extends the same musical and lyrical spirit of Frigid Stars, with a couple of slight but intriguing changes woven in. Admittedly, that won't be apparent on the first song, "Realize," which fully confirms that Codeine's combination of deliberate pace and electric guitar playing both, along with softly sung rumination courtesy of Immerwahr, is pretty much its compositional mode rather than affectation. Those put off by earlier Codeine won't want to continue; those taken by its way of doing things will happily embrace it. From there Barely Real makes its careful way over about twenty-five minutes, with some guest performers popping up to leaven things. One Jon Fine adds "noisy guitar" to the mix on "Jr.," with a quick stuttering main riff to its credit, while David Grubbs contributes both piano and arrangement for "W." It's a highlight of Barely Real, essentially a Grubbs solo performance, but still sounding exactly like something Codeine would write. Other high points include the echo and burying in the mix of Immerwahr's voice on "Hard to Find" and the slightly surprising conclusion, a cover of MX-80 Sound's "Promise of Love" done in a bit of a late-night jazz club style with more typical Codeine interjections towards the end." MOONSHAKE - EVA LUNA [1992]

"The only full-length album recorded by Moonshake's original lineup, Eva Luna is bursting with ideas and tension; dissonant instrumental lines careen off of both noisy samples and spacey dream pop textures, resting on a bed of hypnotic dub bass grooves and deliberate, deeply funky percussion. Just as exciting as the seemingly alien soundscapes is the precarious coalition between singers and songwriters Dave Callahan and Margaret Fiedler, who weave their divergent songwriting and performance approaches into something of a double-sided personality. Callahan delivers his tales of despairing cynicism and rage over modern urban life with theatrical growls and nasal wails, while Fiedler's hushed murmurs and understated purr belie the aggression lurking under her songs' often nightmarish psycho-sexual dramas. Above all, Eva Luna's sound collages are dark and edgy, regardless of whether their overall tone is mellow or furious; the album's dense layers of sonic detail and the ebb and flow between Callahan and Fiedler's contrasting songwriting styles make it a richly inventive, endlessly fascinating listen -- and unfortunately the only full-length album of its kind in the group's oeuvre. Matador's American reissue appends the three tracks from the "Secondhand Clothes" single." AMG

A STORM OF LIGHT - FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES [2009]

"The end of times is a concept that’s been with mankind since he first began daubing blood and ash on cave walls, and now Brooklyn’s heaviest of hitters A Storm Of Light are picking up the baton with their latest masterpiece, “Forgive Us Our Trespasses.”

The band have already proven themselves master storytellers , their acclaimed 2008 debut “And We Wept The Black Ocean Within” sending shockwaves through the avant metal underground with its bracken-draped tales of seafaring woe and this year’s “Primitive North” collaboration with Nadja cementing their status as leading lights in the ever-shifting realms of metal’s experimental fringes.

“Forgive Us Our Trespasses” showcases a more refined sound and a significant broadening of scope, the band leading the listener on a millennial journey that sees the modest curls of smoke rising from nomadic campsites gradually replaced by the billowing smokestacks of industry before being cast down and consigned to the soil once more as the planet rouses from its aeon-long slumber.

“All you really have to do is look around you to see where things are headed,” muses guitarist, vocalist and in-house artist Josh Graham, “the album basically charts humankind’s journey toward oblivion as the planet awakens and tips the scales back in its own favour. Needless to say, the outlook for humanity in all of this isn’t exactly too bright" LAST.FM

SUMA - LET THE CHURCHES BURN [2006]

"The band moved into really heavy, bombastic sounding psych. Huge monumental sound picture, glancing at aspects of drone as well as noisier sludge and keeping some of the razor riffage. They practically forged a sound completely of their own, becoming one of the most interesting bands of contemporary experimental music. Maybe the most legible difference apart from the style adjustment is singer Jovan’s development. This guy can move mountains with his breath and fits the concept perfectly. The heavy effects laid over his voice make the sound trance like. Another fact contributing to this mammoth of an album, also a clearly important one, was that SUMA managed to get fresh ideas into the production by collaborating with engine ear/producer extra ordinaire Billy Anderson. His touch is noticeable throughout the album, but never takes over. A perfect match. The band come to their right when they improvise, jam it up in lengthy sound travels…through outer and inner space, hypnotizing you, making you forget everything else." LAST.FM

BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL- OUR LOVE WILL DESTROY THE WORLD [2006]

"Operating under the name Birchville Cat Motel for more than a decade, New Zealand's Campbell Kneale has mapped a formidable, boundless body of drone. Across the course of his innumerable available (and hopelessly unavailable) recordings, Kneale has crafted his various free-form creations with an uncommon patience and a painterly eye for detail, resulting in a catalog that veers dramatically from austere electronic flutter to ferocious scorched-earth noise.

Kneale's work has become increasingly guided by the pull of black/doom metal in recent years, as best exemplified by his sludgy productions as Black Boned Angel. This inclination is in glorious display on Our Love Will Destroy the World, a new Birchville full-length that inseparably marries Kneale's mile-deep electric drones and jacked-up Neu!/Hawkwind propulsion to create a gnarled, ridiculously savage heavy-psych juggernaut.

On many of Birchville's past albums, such as last year's exquisite With Maples Ablaze, Kneale has been joined by collaborators like Reynols, Dead C's Bruce Russell, and Lee Ranaldo. It's unclear, however, whether Kneale had any guests contribute to the multi-tracked ensemble din of Our Love. Despite its full-band assault the album advances with such a concentrated, beam-like focus that it sounds as though it might have been transmitted onto tape directly via one man's seething brainwaves.

Two of the five tracks here originally appeared on 2003's out-of-print Screamformelongbeach CD-R. Among the others is the centerpiece, the seismic, 16-minute riff-mantra "55,000 Flowers For the Hero", an Acid Mothers Temple-style piledriver whose emotive impact is somewhat akin to being overtaken by a swift-flowing river of molten asphalt. Incredibly dense with massed overtones of guitar and electronics, this track appears at once monolithic yet dazzlingly intricate in its drifting shadows, shedding excess layers as it very gradually melts away to a lone specter of amp distortion. Likewise, "Heaven's Flaming Horse" combines sawblade drones and turbulent grindcore rhythms to forge an insoluble, corrosive mass of charred flesh and spent wiring, reducing metal's flash and bombast down to an endlessly intense, solitary roar.

Following this barrage the melodic "Lay Thy Hatred Down" appears as an oasis of tranquility, the counterpoint of Kneale's sedate guitar and woodwind figures providing the listener a brief respite from the album's high-octane oblivion. The mysterious organ and doctored-tape drone of "Double Cascade Mini Fantasy" adds a welcome touch of gothic confusion; the set-closing title track is another tortured, color-saturated Sabbath riff, bombarded from all angles with random debris and piercing electronic wails. Less authoritative and hypnotic than the earlier "55,000 Flowers", this redundant finale comes as a slight letdown, though it is somewhat redeemed by its prolonged outro of vibrant, stray particles that careen about as if in desperate search for another unfathomable riff to ride. And judging by Kneale's overall productivity and obvious passion for Birchville's new, heavier direction, the guess here is the wait for that riff will not be long."

THIS HEAT - DECEIT [1981]

"Out of all the boundary breaking that occurred during the fertile era of post-punk, This Heat's Deceit is one of the most expansive, imaginative, and remarkably wild records to have been produced during the time -- and very possibly the last three decades. It's an impressive procession of tangential shards that encompass tape collages, Middle Eastern motifs, barbaric vocal clamoring, and occasional pointy-jagged-atonal guitar passages that alternate between hypnotizing and shooting clean through your spine. The typical structures of jazz, world music, and rock & roll are heaved into a blender, cooking up a post-punk paella that's about as relaxing as a crosstown walk through a hail storm. It ends up hardly resembling anything it takes cues from. As with a good number of the album's ten tracks, random peeks into "Paper Hats" at the minute markers will hardly sound like the same song. And that song hardly resembles any of the others on the record; yet, it encapsulates what makes the whole thing so exciting. The song in question trots along arrhythmically with some bass, drum, and spindly guitar interplay until sputtering into a wreck of those instruments and who knows what else -- this 20-second interruption, which resembles the Junkyard Gang's idea of warming up, abruptly gives way to a march down a Twilight Zone-themed corridor of snaky guitar, pulsing high hats, and creeped-out atmospherics. If you can make out any of the lyrics (the ones in "Independence" should ring a bell, though), you'll realize the mushroom clouds and political figures depicted in the sleeve aren't the only evidence that the record is about war and nukes. Know this -- if you really want to be thrown around a room, there's hardly a better source. No greater record has been made in an abandoned meat locker." AMG

They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which typically feature animal suits, puppets, streamers, video projections and complex stage light configurations.

In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the “50 Bands to See Before You Die”. In 2006, Oklahoma City named a street Flaming Lips Alley in their honor.

DIE! DIE! DIE! - SELF TITLED [2005]

Originally hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, but now based in the indie hotbed of Dunedin (the heart of the Kiwi pop scene since the early days of Flying Nun Records in the '80s), Die! Die! Die! are an abrasive noise pop trio with hardcore punk roots, as befits their rather antisocial name. However, while singer and guitarist Andrew Wilson's ranting vocal style and dissonant, slashing guitar parts sound directly inspired by Big Black (whose leader, Steve Albini, recorded their self-titled debut) and the New York no wave bands of the late '70s, the ultra-tight rhythm section of bassist Lachlan Anderson and drummer Michael Prain comes from the danceable neo-funk tradition of Gang of Four and A Certain Ratio. The aforementioned debut album, Die! Die! Die!, was released in New Zealand in the fall of 2006, followed shortly thereafter by a four-track EP of all new material, Locust Weeks. Die! Die! RYE-COALITION - LIPSTICK GAME [1999]

"Childhood friends Ralph Cuseglio (vocals) and Jon Gonnelli (guitar) yearned to play rock music and at the helm of grunge, the two formed Rye Coalition. David Leto joined in to play drums and brought along his childhood mate, Justin Morey, to play bass. A dynamic within the group was tight, while Herb Wiley was added to make it a sure fit. The members of Rye Coalition were barely 20 when they issued their five-song demo, The Dancing Man, in 1994. A few shows in and around their native New York sparked a fervent desire, but they were a working-class band who came from well-educated households. Cuseglio and Gonnelli attended college in New Jersey, whereas Wiley left the group in 1996 to do the same. Now a four-piece, Rye Coalition issued several 7" EPs, one split with Karp, and toured the country. Hee Saw Dhuh Kaet, the band's first studio effort, was released on Gern Blandsten in 1997; however, Morey departed for a West Coast venture. Leto's brother, Gregg Leto, moved in on drums, allowing Dave to take over bass duties. Rye Coalition, who's driving punk snarls were taking hold of scenes overseas, embarked on their first European tour in late 1997. Two years later, The Lipstick Game appeared and Morey returned after Gregg Leto left for college. By the new millennium, the band's regular responsibilities fell short when Cuseglio went to graduate school and the others took on day jobs in education. A six-month break was well-deserved, but Rye Coalition came out to play a gig with Shellac, Seam, Don Cab, and Uzeda in mid-2000. After such a powerful performance, they finally decided to make Rye Coalition a full-time thing. A deal with Tiger Style surfaced in 2001 and Wiley came back in time to record On Top with producer Steve Albini. A shared tour with Trans Am followed that winter, prepping Rye Coalition for the release of their third album." AMG

Since its inception, Fugazi has been self-managed and have released almost all their material through Dischord Records, an independent label founded by MacKaye and partner Jeff Nelson in 1980. The band maintained a policy of affordable access to their work through low record and ticket prices and all-ages concerts.

Says AMG All Music Guide, “Along with their stridently underground ethics — which were more out of pragmatism and modesty than anything else — they gained an extremely loyal and numerous global following. To many, Fugazi meant as much to them as Bob Dylan did to their parents.”

JUNE OF 44 - ENGINE TAKES TO THE WATER [1995]

"June of 44 was an American rock band which was formed in 1994 from ex-members of Rodan, Lungfish, Codeine and Hoover (Sean Meadows had yet to participate in the Lungfish music band by 1994; his first album with them was actually in 1996). Clearly influenced by Slint, the band’s music is often described as post-rock. June of 44 released their work on Quarter Stick with the exception of Fish 6.

NAKED CITY - TORTURE GARDEN [1989]

"Naked City was something of an avant-rock/free jazz New York supergroup in the late '80s and early '90s, featuring an all-star cast of New York jazz experimentalists and led by the most-famous downtown musician of them all, John Zorn. Comprised of Zorn on alto sax, Wayne Horvitz on keyboards, Bill Frisell on guitar, Fred Frith on bass, and Joey Baron on drums (and occasionally vocalist Yamatsuka Eye), Naked City, more than any other Zorn-led group, established him with a rock audience. The band had an enormous repertoire and its sets were famously unpredictable. Zorn says that he conceived the band as a compositional workshop; the challenge was to write as much as possible within the limited format. Once he stopped "hearing and writing for the band," it disbanded." AMG

CODEINE - FRIGID STARS [1990]

"The early-'90s New York trio Codeine is one of the founders of the slowcore scene that includes groups like Bedhead, American Analog Set, and Low. Taking audible inspiration from the third Velvet Underground album and scene pioneers Galaxie 500, but adding a more aggressive tone and slowing the tempos down even further, Codeine sounded almost entirely unique at the time. However, their style was immediately adopted by a number of other new bands, some of which do the tense and glacial thing even better.

Codeine was formed in 1989 by bassist/singer Stephen Immerwahr, guitarist John Engle, and drummer Chris Brokaw. Their demo, a tortured version of the Pete Ham/Tom Evans classic "Without You" that stretches the four-minute song out to nine, got the band signed to Glitterhouse Records in Europe and Sub Pop in the U.S. the following year. Their debut album, Frigid Stars LP, was released by Glitterhouse in late 1990 and Sub Pop in the spring of 1991 to generally positive reviews..." AMG

GLENN BRANCA - THE ASCENSION [1981]

"I'll sell out anytime anybody wants me to" Glenn Branca once mused, "[but] there are no buyers." This accords with Branca's perennial position on that fringe between the edgier end of art music and the artsier end of rock. An admirer of Young, Glass, and Reich, and a mentor to members of Sonic Youth, Helmet, and the Swans, Branca helped pollinate the downtown New York scene in the 1980s and '90s and infused experimental rock with minimalist ideas. While he earned his reputation with a series of high-volume, microtonal works for multiple electric guitars, his oeuvre also includes works for traditional orchestral forces. In the face of Branca's eclectic output and rather ambiguous aesthetic, the label "crossover" is at once convenient and clumsy.

Branca was born in 1948 in Harrisburg, PA. He studied theater at Emerson College, and briefly tried playwriting before turning to more musically oriented projects. Upon moving to New York in 1976 he co-founded, with Jeffrey Lohn, the no wave band Theoretical Girls. Branca's subsequent band, the Static, incubated Branca's signature obsession: turning minimalism's hyperattentive ear for microacoustic detail toward the harmonically complex sounds of electric guitars. In 1979 Branca established his namesake ensemble, the varying roster of which included Thurston Moore, Lee Renaldo, Page Hamilton, Ned Sublette, and Branca's wife, Regina Bloor. The works for this group were characterized by intense sound fields shimmering with upper overtones (drawn out through alternative tunings). John Cage famously complained, after attending a performance of Indeterminate Activity of Resultant Masses (1981), that "I found in myself a willingness to connect the music with evil and with power...If it were something political, it would resemble fascism." What Cage heard as oppressive Branca meant as celebratory -- an unapologetic indulgence in sustained musical climax; this idea informed works throughout the '80s, including several multi-movement guitar symphonies. In 1989 Branca composed his Symphony No. 7, one of several works for traditional orchestra; this marked a change in aesthetic as well as instrumentation, as Branca embraced it as "the most beautiful instrument yet conceived by any orchestra." Rather than renounce his early post-minimalist focus, however, he sensed a complimentarity between these two sounds, and continued composing for both orchestra and guitar ensemble. In June 2001 he presented his most sonically ambitious project of all -- at, of all places, the base of the World Trade Center: his Symphony No. 13, for 100 electric guitars." AMG

GOD - POSSESSION [1992]

"U.K. musician and writer Kevin Martin started God, one of his many musical projects, thanks to an unlikely but inspired source -- Mark E. Smith. The Fall frontman contacted Martin in 1987 to ask him for a submission for Disparate Cognescenti, a compilation Smith was then planning for release on the Cog Sinister label. Initially, Martin's main musical partner was Shane Rogan, who handled guitar while Martin concentrated on tenor sax and vocals. There was no set God lineup or even a particular musical style for the remainder of the '80s, with the two working with a variety of players while Martin's energy went in part to running London's Mule Club, where God often performed alongside bands like Napalm Death and Godflesh. Guitarist Justin Broadrick, veteran of the former and leader of the latter, soon befriended Martin, helping to produce the band's debut release, Breach Birth, a 1990 EP on Situation Two Records. Broadrick soon formally joined God as part of his regular musical partnership with Martin, which included such projects as Techno-Animal and Ice, while God themselves expanded to a more or less regular nine-person roster. Loco, God's next major release, was a live album appearing on Martin's own Pathological label in 1991, demonstrating the band's newfound focus on combining numerous free jazz inspirations from the '70s and '80s with amp-bursting heavy metal. Possession followed in 1992, the group's formal, album-length studio debut, which surprisingly turned up on Virgin Records; 1993 saw another live album, Consumed, which appeared on the likely more amenable label Sentrax. 1994 wrapped up God's existence with two more albums, the final studio effort The Anatomy of Addiction and a subsequent remix album, Appeal to Human Greed. Martin and Broadrick then pursued their other joint efforts, but God went permanently on ice. " AMG

KAYO DOT - CHOIRS OF THE EYE [2003]

"Epic washes of crunchy guitar and sophisticated modern chamber music combine in the world of Kayo Dot. After the progressive metal-oriented Maudlin of the Well disbanded in late 2002, some of the group's members were lost, and a change of direction was needed. Toby Driver (vocals, guitar, electronics), Greg Massi (guitar, vocals), Nicholas Kyte (bass, vocals), Sam Gutterman (drums, vocals), and Terran Olson (keyboards, flute, clarinet, saxophone) carried on and formed Kayo Dot in early 2003. While Maudlin of the Well lived in the metal arena, Kayo Dot approached music with a more modern classical attitude. Composition was strict and the band showed interest in playing concerts the way orchestras do, more formal and in more traditional venues. Guitars and vocals still drew from the world of rock and metal, but to stress this was a new band and direction, concerts contained no Maudlin of the Well material. John Zorn's avant-garde- and experimental-leaning label, Tzadik, issued the band's debut, Choirs of the Eye, in late 2003. In 2006 the group released Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue, followed by Blue Lambency Downward in 2008. " AMG

SUPERSILENT - 8 [2007]

"Norwegian death-free jazz-electronic band Supersilent began as an impromptu jam at the 1997 Bergen Jazz Festival between master trumpeter Arve Henriksen, tape experimenter Helge Sten (who also goes as Deathprod for solo material), Jarle Vespestad on drums, and Stale Storløkken on keyboards. The group decided to continue to play together in Helge Sten's studio and recorded endless hours of tape, eventually spliced into 1998's 1-3, a three-CD collection of wild, percussive free jazz with flourishes of Aphex Twin-like electronics. Integral to the band from this time on was their desire to only exist as a performing group -- they never "write" songs, practice, and barely even speak to one another outside of gigs. This release, like all others, is without overdubs and with minimal production.

On 4, the group incorporated the influence of fellow Rune Grammofon labelmate Arne Nordheim, an electro-acoustic composer whose dark-tinged experiments are a studio controlled kin to Supersilent. The uncreatively named 5 was compiled from over 30 hours of live recordings at live performances in Oslo, London, and Bologna in 2001. Here, Henriksen's strong skills come to the fore while more traditional jazz elements take hold in the din of noise. " AMG

THE PSYCHIC PARAMOUNT - GAMELAN INTO THE MINK SUPERNATURAL [2005]

"With the demise of Laddio Bolocko, guitarist Drew St. Ivany and bassist Ben Armstrong felt the need to pursue further musical endeavors, and in 2002 formed the avant-garde, post-rock psych outfit the Psychic Paramount. Based in New York, the pair began work on acoustic recordings before taking the plunge on a quickly put together European tour shortly after forming. A drummer -- Tatsuya Nakatani -- was roped in for the gigs, and off they went. The tour was a success, not just in helping the outfit hone its skills, but -- mainly -- in that the Psychic Paramount came back with a live CD ready to go. The live debut, Live 2002: The Franco-Italian Tour, was released on Bewilderment and Illumination, and was paired with a handful of Super 8 footage, and would see release in 2005. While the live record wasn't technically the first official release for the Psychic Paramount -- they had already put out Origins and Primitives, Vol. 1 -- the live offering would be their first real statement of intent. Unfortunately, Nakatani left the group soon after returning from the European jaunt, and was replaced by Sabers drummer Jeff Conaway. With the new roster in place, the Paramount entered the studio to work on 2005's Gamelan into the Mink Supernatural, which would eventually see release on No Quarter. In 2006, that same label reissued the band's Origins and Primitives release, adding on a volume 2, and putting it out on vinyl and CD. In 2007, the Psychic Paramount was found touring the United States with fellow avant-rockers Trans Am. " AMG

WOLF EYES - HUMAN ANIMAL [2006]

"Wolf Eyes began as a solo project of former Nautical Almanac member Nate Young, with Aaron Dilloway joining in 1999, and John Olson in 2000. During this time, the band also briefly relocated to New York City and at one point enlisted Andrew Wilkes-Krier, now known to the public as Andrew W.K.. The group is rumored to have released over 150 recordings in their relatively short lifespan, on labels such as Bulb Records, Troubleman Unlimited, Fusetron, and Sub Pop, as well as on Olson’s American Tapes label, Dilloway’s Hanson Records and, most recently, Mike Connelly’s Gods of Tundra label. Connelly (also of Hair Police) replaced Dilloway on tour in early 2005, due to the latter’s departure for Nepal to make arrangements for his marriage, but Dilloway still records with the original members.

Most Wolf Eyes recordings are self-released, following the DIY tradition of bands such as Smegma. Their first major release was Dread, released on the American Tapes and Hanson Records labels but distributed through Bulb Records. Other major releases include Dead Hills on Troubleman and Burned Mind on Sub Pop. Most Wolf Eyes recordings are released as either lathes, cassettes, or cd-rs.

Wolf Eyes’ first two major tours were with Sonic Youth and Andrew W.K." LAST.FM

PITCHFORK - EUCALYPTUS + SATURN OUTHOUSE EP [1990]

"One of the earlier punk bands on the San Diego scene, Pitchfork are most remembered for being the first collaboration between Drive Like Jehu guitarists John "Speedo" Reis and Rick Froberg (then calling himself Rick Fork). Influenced primarily by SST (Sonic Youth, Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü) and proto-emo bands (Rites of Spring, Squirrel Bait), Pitchfork formed circa 1985 or 1986, with a rhythm section featuring drummer Joey Piro and a bassist known -- with typical punk informality -- only as Nick. At first, Reis led this lineup as a trio; new lead vocalist and guitarist Froberg's arrival brought not only a beefed-up instrumental sound, but a greater dedication. Pitchfork signed with the indie label Nemesis and released their debut 7" single, "Saturn Outhouse," in 1989; they'd already recorded a full-length album the year before, and it was finally released in 1990 under the title Eucalyptus. By that time, Reis and Froberg had decided to pursue other projects. Reis founded and led major-label trash-punkers Rocket From the Crypt, and he and Froberg teamed with a new rhythm section to form the acclaimed, progressive post-hardcore band Drive Like Jehu. " AMG

THE JESUS LIZARD DISCOGRAPHY [1989-1999]

"Willfully abrasive and atonal, the Jesus Lizard emerged in the early '90s as a leading noise rock band in the American independent underground. During the first part of the decade, the band turned out a series of independent records filled with scathing, disembowelling, guitar-driven pseudo-industrial noise, all of which received positive reviews in underground music publications and heavy college-radio play. By the mid-'90s, the group's following had grown large enough to convince a major label, Capitol Records, to sign the band.

The Jesus Lizard was formed by Duane Denison (guitar), David Yow (vocals), and David Sims (bass), the latter two being former members of the Austin-based post-hardcore noise group Scratch Acid. After ..." AMG

UNWOUND - DISCOGRAPHY [1991-2001]

"Perhaps the most musically abrasive group in the world of indie-rock, Unwound specialize in a dense collection of crushing power chords rising to feedback, melding the noise of Sonic Youth's more raucous passages with a rare energetic flair which rivals even that of Fugazi. Formed in 1991 in a small town close to the indie-rock nerve center of Olympia, Washington, Unwound was originally a trio of vocalist/guitarist Justin Trosper, bassist Vern Rumsey and drummer Brandt Sandeno. The band released two singles for Kill Rock Stars and one for Gravity Records before recording an album in early 1992. Sandeno left the group in July -- stalling release of the self-titled album until it appeared in 1995 on Unwound's own label, Punk in My Vitamins -- and was replaced by Sara Lund, a native of Bloomington, Indiana and a former member of Witchypoo and the Belgian Waffles. Unwound's first released album was Fake Train, issued in mid-1993 on Kill Rock Stars. On the band's three subsequent albums, recorded one per year from 1994 to 1996, Unwound rarely diverged from a biting attack on melody and song structure, abandoning most elements of musicality except for a brilliant use of harmony in Trosper's lines of feedback. 1998's Challenge for a Civilized Society continued their extremist traditions, and Leaves Turn Inside You followed in spring 2001. NADJA - BODYCAGE [2005]

"Based in Toronto, this ambient doom/metal/electronic duo was the brainchild (and originally the solo project) of Aidan Baker. Already a prolific musician who had released a number of works with labels worldwide -- including a vast catalog of CD-R only releases -- Baker used Nadja to explore the darker aspects of his musical soul. Taking on vocalist and bass player Leah Buckareff allowed the expansion of Nadja's sound, as well as the ability to play live. Established in 2003, Nadja's early releases followed the pattern already established by Baker, that is to say a lot of CD-R limited releases, but by 2005, the duo was ready for official release, and Alien8 released that year's Truth Becomes Death. More releases followed, including EPs and collaborative efforts, and in 2007 Alien8 and Nadja released the well-received Touched. The band also built a following by opening shows for such post-metal luminaries as Ocean and Isis. " AMG
