OVAL - OVALPROCESS [2000]

"By the time of Ovalprocess, Oval's fifth full album, the clicks-and-cuts style of experimental ambience Markus Popp and company helped develop nearly a decade before was being championed all over the world, from Tokyo (Nobukazu Takemura) to Berlin (Pole) to Sheffield (SND) to San Francisco (Kit Clayton). All of which makes it a bit of a surprise that Process remains a distinctive work. The scratchy bass hum and high-pitched, atonal effects heard on most every track are very nearly Oval trademarks, and despite the focus on experimentation, Ovalprocess retains yet another hallmark of the group's productions: it's a remarkably beautiful album. Granted, this won't quite signify to listeners unfamiliar with the genre, but when the album climaxes (on the ninth untitled track) with a droning organ melody heard faintly above a cacophony of glitch static, electronics fans might just find themselves wiping their eyes from the wonder of it all. Even among considerable competition, Oval remains the very best at making beautiful music out of civilization's sonic detritus." AMG

TOMAHAWK - MIT GAS [2003]

"Tomahawk combines the rockist tendencies of Faith No More with the weirdo prog freakout of Mr. Bungle, two of Tomahawk vocalist Mike Patton's more popularly received projects. The band is actually the project of former Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison, and on Mit Gas, the band's second album, he drops his prior fight for melodic lead, letting Patton growl, sustain, babble, stutter, croon, and yowl through each precision-stopped, layered track. Maybe all those nights of getting booed off the stage while touring with Tool (after the 2001 self-titled release) taught them a thing or two about indulging star power. With John Stanier (formerly of Helmet) and Kevin Rutmanis (the Cows, the Melvins) also on board, though, it's hard to decide who isn't a star. "You Can't Win," a track akin to Mr. Bungle in its circus/lounge mood and cracked chanting, is an outstanding example of Tomahawk's metal kid to avantist maturity -- everything from strings to wood blocks informs a centrally pop song with indiscernibly sinister lyrics reminiscent of Brainiac. The track ends with a hazy ambient moan. It floats into "Mayday," a pretty straightforward metal song. Then there's a dreamy ballad in Spanish, a surf-rock one called "Harelip," and the excellent, slightly Foo Fighters-sounding "Rape This Day." You probably won't find this album at Wal-Mart. It's worth searching out, though, as Patton et al. expand the borders of guitar rock with intelligence and humor more absurd and egalitarian than the band's obvious predecessor -- Frank Zappa. " AMG

"Xiu Xiu (pronounced “shew shew”) is an experimental band originally from San Jose, California and currently based in Durham, NC and Brooklyn The band is named after the main character of the 1998 Chinese film Tian yu (a.k.a. Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl).
Xiu Xiu was first formed in 2000 and is the main project of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who records with friends on his home computer. Past members include Cory McCulloch, Lauren Andrews and Yvonne Chen. Stewart’s cousin, Caralee McElroy joined the band in 2003 and was the only other permanent member of the band until her departure in early 2009. "Puscifer is an experimental project by Maynard James Keenan (Tool/A Perfect Circle). Puscifer is “as much a clothing line as it is a band”, and Maynard James Keenan has described it as “Simply a playground for the various voices in my head, it’s a space with no clear or discernible goals. It’s where my Id, Ego, and Anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes.”
For a long time the only released tracks were “REV 22:20”, “REV 22:20 (REV 4:20 Mix)” (remixed by Charlie Clouser) and “The Undertaker (Renholder Mix)” featured on the “Underworld - 2003”, “Saw II - 2005” and “Underworld: Evolution - 2006” soundtracks.
In October 2007 the EP ‘Don’t Shoot the Messenger’ and the album ‘”V” is for Vagina’ were released on Puscifer Entertainment. JOHN ZORN - FEMINA [2009]

"John Zorn (born 2 September 1953 in New York City) is an American composer and saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist. He owns the Tzadik record label and has worked with a large number of experimental musicians, particularly in improvised music, incorporating modern classical music, jazz and even death metal and grindcore as well as having produced music to include most styles.
As a child, he played piano, guitar and flute. He went to college in St. Louis, Missouri at Webster College (now Webster University) where he discovered free jazz, before dropping out and moving to Manhattan. There he gave concerts in his small apartment, playing a variety of reeds, duck calls, tapes, etc; almost anything (sometimes he played “musical optics” which involved no instruments or sounds at all, but rather the arrangement of lights and objects in a dark room). In the mid 1980s he signed to the Elektra-Nonesuch label. Since then, Zorn has been quite prolific, usually putting out several new records each year. His breakthrough recording was perhaps 1985’s The Big Gundown: John Zorn Plays the Music of Ennio Morricone, wherein Zorn offered a number of often radical arrangements of Morricone’s famed songs from various movies. The Big Gundown was endorsed by Morricone, and incorporated elements of traditional Japanese music, soul jazz, and other diverse musical genres." LAST.FM

If there is such a thing as a funky Throbbing Gristle LP, however, this could well be it. "Hot on the Heels of Love," "Still Walking" and "Six Six Sixties" add only occasional bits of distortion between the rigid sequencer lines. 20 Jazz Funk Greats is the best compromise between TG's early industrial aesthetic and the reams of industrial-dance and dark synth-pop groups that used the album as a stepping stone to crossover appeal." THIS HEAT - DECEIT [1981]

"Out of all the boundary breaking that occurred during the fertile era of post-punk, This Heat's Deceit is one of the most expansive, imaginative, and remarkably wild records to have been produced during the time -- and very possibly the last three decades. It's an impressive procession of tangential shards that encompass tape collages, Middle Eastern motifs, barbaric vocal clamoring, and occasional pointy-jagged-atonal guitar passages that alternate between hypnotizing and shooting clean through your spine. The typical structures of jazz, world music, and rock & roll are heaved into a blender, cooking up a post-punk paella that's about as relaxing as a crosstown walk through a hail storm. It ends up hardly resembling anything it takes cues from. As with a good number of the album's ten tracks, random peeks into "Paper Hats" at the minute markers will hardly sound like the same song. And that song hardly resembles any of the others on the record; yet, it encapsulates what makes the whole thing so exciting. The song in question trots along arrhythmically with some bass, drum, and spindly guitar interplay until sputtering into a wreck of those instruments and who knows what else -- this 20-second interruption, which resembles the Junkyard Gang's idea of warming up, abruptly gives way to a march down a Twilight Zone-themed corridor of snaky guitar, pulsing high hats, and creeped-out atmospherics. If you can make out any of the lyrics (the ones in "Independence" should ring a bell, though), you'll realize the mushroom clouds and political figures depicted in the sleeve aren't the only evidence that the record is about war and nukes. Know this -- if you really want to be thrown around a room, there's hardly a better source. No greater record has been made in an abandoned meat locker." AMG

"Naked City was something of an avant-rock/free jazz New York supergroup in the late '80s and early '90s, featuring an all-star cast of New York jazz experimentalists and led by the most-famous downtown musician of them all, John Zorn. Comprised of Zorn on alto sax, Wayne Horvitz on keyboards, Bill Frisell on guitar, Fred Frith on bass, and Joey Baron on drums (and occasionally vocalist Yamatsuka Eye), Naked City, more than any other Zorn-led group, established him with a rock audience. The band had an enormous repertoire and its sets were famously unpredictable. Zorn says that he conceived the band as a compositional workshop; the challenge was to write as much as possible within the limited format. Once he stopped "hearing and writing for the band," it disbanded." AMG

GOD - POSSESSION [1992]

"U.K. musician and writer Kevin Martin started God, one of his many musical projects, thanks to an unlikely but inspired source -- Mark E. Smith. The Fall frontman contacted Martin in 1987 to ask him for a submission for Disparate Cognescenti, a compilation Smith was then planning for release on the Cog Sinister label. Initially, Martin's main musical partner was Shane Rogan, who handled guitar while Martin concentrated on tenor sax and vocals. There was no set God lineup or even a particular musical style for the remainder of the '80s, with the two working with a variety of players while Martin's energy went in part to running London's Mule Club, where God often performed alongside bands like Napalm Death and Godflesh. Guitarist Justin Broadrick, veteran of the former and leader of the latter, soon befriended Martin, helping to produce the band's debut release, Breach Birth, a 1990 EP on Situation Two Records. Broadrick soon formally joined God as part of his regular musical partnership with Martin, which included such projects as Techno-Animal and Ice, while God themselves expanded to a more or less regular nine-person roster. Loco, God's next major release, was a live album appearing on Martin's own Pathological label in 1991, demonstrating the band's newfound focus on combining numerous free jazz inspirations from the '70s and '80s with amp-bursting heavy metal. Possession followed in 1992, the group's formal, album-length studio debut, which surprisingly turned up on Virgin Records; 1993 saw another live album, Consumed, which appeared on the likely more amenable label Sentrax. 1994 wrapped up God's existence with two more albums, the final studio effort The Anatomy of Addiction and a subsequent remix album, Appeal to Human Greed. Martin and Broadrick then pursued their other joint efforts, but God went permanently on ice. " AMG

KAYO DOT - CHOIRS OF THE EYE [2003]

"Epic washes of crunchy guitar and sophisticated modern chamber music combine in the world of Kayo Dot. After the progressive metal-oriented Maudlin of the Well disbanded in late 2002, some of the group's members were lost, and a change of direction was needed. Toby Driver (vocals, guitar, electronics), Greg Massi (guitar, vocals), Nicholas Kyte (bass, vocals), Sam Gutterman (drums, vocals), and Terran Olson (keyboards, flute, clarinet, saxophone) carried on and formed Kayo Dot in early 2003. While Maudlin of the Well lived in the metal arena, Kayo Dot approached music with a more modern classical attitude. Composition was strict and the band showed interest in playing concerts the way orchestras do, more formal and in more traditional venues. Guitars and vocals still drew from the world of rock and metal, but to stress this was a new band and direction, concerts contained no Maudlin of the Well material. John Zorn's avant-garde- and experimental-leaning label, Tzadik, issued the band's debut, Choirs of the Eye, in late 2003. In 2006 the group released Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue, followed by Blue Lambency Downward in 2008. " AMG

LIGHTNING BOLT - EARTHLY DELIGHTS [2009]

"Lightning Bolt emerged from Providence, Rhode Island in 1995 as a three-piece art school project. Initially there was Brian Chippendale's explosive, non-stop drumming, Brian Gibson's Contortions-like bass lines, and Hisham Bharoocha's vocals propelling them in a fury of volatile noise and orgiastic tribalism. The group helped found Fort Thunder, a music and art collective, and recorded a self-titled album which was issued through Load in 1999. By 2001's Ride the Skies Bharoocha had departed (he eventually formed Black Dice.). This left the vocal duties to Chippendale, who jammed the microphone into his mouth as he drummed. Lightning Bolt did a series of tours with bands like The Locust, Arab on Radar, Orchid, and Melt Banana before returning in 2003 with the studio album Wonderful Rainbow. The album did very well in underground music circles, and set up the release of 2005's Hypermagic Mountain."
