SUPERSILENT - 6 [2003]

"Play it over and over, and you will still find amazing things in Supersilent's 6. The level of unspoken understanding, interplay, and clarity of vision in experimentation is now beyond words. This album was put together from four days of improvisations in the studio. The digipack case doesn't mention the group members to reinforce the idea of a collective effort, but the press release confirms that the lineup has remained the same: Helge Sten (aka Deathprod) on electronics, Ståle Storløkken on keyboards and synthesizers, Jarle Vespestad on drums, and Arve Henriksen on trumpet and electronics. The music follows the ambient path laid down in 5, while adding more textural noise and hypnotic rhythms. Deathprod has selected a captivating set that unfolds delicately, immersing the listener on an hourlong journey. Unrehearsed and improvised as they may be, these pieces sound scripted at the very least, the individual interventions too well timed not to be planned ahead. Henriksen's sparse trumpet calls in "6.2" and his soft singing over light distorted piano in "6.6" provide memorable moments. In the fourth piece, the group finds an irresistible momentum propelled by Vespestad's drumming, the kind of freight-train-to-outer-space drive that should send all members of Godspeed You Black Emperor! back to their bedrooms. Supersilent simply does it better, without the irritating poise. Highly recommended to dreamers, droners, and avant rock lovers." AMG

SUN CITY GIRLS - 330,003 CROSSDRESSERS FROM BEYOND THE RIG VEDA [1996]

"A melting pot of music styles — demented surf, Indian Rāgas, free-form noise, gamelan percussion, fractured folk, you name it — with doses of kabuki theater, shadow puppetry, and maverick guerilla stagecraft thrown in, the avant-everything Sun City Girls were a fiercely independent and experimental trio whose only credo seemed to be to continually stretch boundaries while remaining amazingly inclusive, a process that led to a dizzying array of vinyl, cassette, and CD releases over a period stretching nearly 20 years.
Formed in Phoenix, AZ, Sun City Girls first performed under the name in 1981, and after morphing into the short-lived Paris 1942 (with former The Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker), the group emerged as a trio with brothers Alan Bishop and Sir Richard Bishop and percussionist Charles Gocher in 1982. Sun City Girls released their first album, Sun City Girls, in 1984 on placebo Records, going on to release nearly 30 official albums since then, along with countless limited-edition vinyl, cassette, and CD-R projects, making the group’s discography almost impossible to completely document. Throughout its history Sun City Girls remained a challenging, unpredictable, and eclectic musical unit, operating outside the commercially driven aspirations of the mainstream recording industry, and eventually becoming something of a beacon to independent musicians and artists everywhere. Relocating to Seattle in the early ’90s, Sun City Girls established their own label, Abduction Records, as well as an archival imprint, Sublime Frequencies." LAST.FM

SUPERSILENT - 9 [2009]

"Supersilent is a Norwegian avant-garde/electroacoustic group signed on Rune Grammofon. The band reportedly never rehearse together or communicate about their music outside of live sets and studio sessions, and uses improvisation as a tool to create spontaneous compositions.

Members of the group are Arve Henriksen, an accomplished trumpet player, Helge Sten (also known as Deathprod) who handles live electronics, synthesizers and guitar, Ståle Storløkken on keyboards and Jarle Vespestad on drums. In 2009 Vespestad left the band and they are continuing as a trio." LAST.FM

SUPERSILENT - 8 [2007]

"Norwegian death-free jazz-electronic band Supersilent began as an impromptu jam at the 1997 Bergen Jazz Festival between master trumpeter Arve Henriksen, tape experimenter Helge Sten (who also goes as Deathprod for solo material), Jarle Vespestad on drums, and Stale Storløkken on keyboards. The group decided to continue to play together in Helge Sten's studio and recorded endless hours of tape, eventually spliced into 1998's 1-3, a three-CD collection of wild, percussive free jazz with flourishes of Aphex Twin-like electronics. Integral to the band from this time on was their desire to only exist as a performing group -- they never "write" songs, practice, and barely even speak to one another outside of gigs. This release, like all others, is without overdubs and with minimal production.

On 4, the group incorporated the influence of fellow Rune Grammofon labelmate Arne Nordheim, an electro-acoustic composer whose dark-tinged experiments are a studio controlled kin to Supersilent. The uncreatively named 5 was compiled from over 30 hours of live recordings at live performances in Oslo, London, and Bologna in 2001. Here, Henriksen's strong skills come to the fore while more traditional jazz elements take hold in the din of noise. " AMG
