ROSETTA - A DETERMINISM OF MORALITY [2010]

Somewhere around a year ago, Rosetta posted the following on their MySpace blog:

'Tonight at practice we had this collective epiphany where we threw off the shackles of the whole "post-metal" thing and decided that WE'RE DONE WITH 105 BPM. BRING ON 150 BPM! So we wrote our ENTIRE NEXT RECORD in an hour, and it's the fastest, craziest, kick-in-the-nuts thing since 1999.'

Underneath the facetiousness is some real frustration. Rosetta have always been uncomfortable being branded as a 'post-metal' group, to the point where the Genre section on their Facebook page currently reads 'Anything put "post"'. To be fair, their debut The Galilean Satellites bears more than a passing resemblance to the NeurISIS sound. Rosetta, however, have always been a staunchly DIY band and so the similarities to that genre are far more aesthetic than ideological.

This frustration seems to be the driving force behind A Determinism of Morality (ADOM from here on), Rosetta's third full-length and a real stylistic evolution. Far from being written in an hour, ADOM feels like a meticulously crafted piece of work that takes all of Rosetta's best qualities and shifts them towards a faster, more streamlined aesthetic. ADOM takes far more cues from post-hardcore acts such as Gospel and Frodus than it does from post-rock or metal, adopting techniques like gang vocals ("Revolve"), stop-start dynamics ("Ayil") and fast, ballsy riffs ("Renew"). But ADOM isn't just a "kick-in-the-nuts" either. Each song hosts some of the most beautiful and delicate moments of the band's career to date. As Wake/Lift did to a lesser extent, ADOM almost completely eschews traditional post-rock build-ups in favour of a more dynamically consistent approach to structure.

Instead of easing us in to the evolved sound, ADOM begins with its fastest, most jarring track. Much like Wake/Lift's opener "Red in Tooth and Claw", "Ayil" is a demonstration of the group's mastery of dynamics and full of anthemic, fist-in-the-air moments. Vocalist Mike Armine delivers one of his most intense performances to date underneath the song's galloping drumming and noodle-y guitar work. Indeed, all of the band members seem to have improved their playing both in technique and diversity. Drummer B.J. McMurtie's playing on previous releases was fancy and dynamically tasteful, but on ADOM he also proves he can rock the **** out with the best of them. Dave Grossman has always taken a solid, meat-and-potatoes approach to his bass playing (the perfect complement to Matt Weed's noisy, all-over-the-place guitar) and ADOM sees him becoming more adept, taking a more active and melodic role. Matt Weed's guitar is perhaps the thing that most sets Rosetta apart from their peers and his techniques are improved considerably here, like with the noisy stop-start riffing at the end of "Ayil" or the tasteful tapping at the end of "Renew". Weed's playing, however, moves away even further from being solely riff-based and sees him combining brutal, tight metal riffs with heavily delayed ambience that finds its niche equally in soft moments and in heavy ones.

"Ayil" is almost hardcore in its structure, riffing, and speed while still retaining the ambience and atmosphere that is crucial to the Rosetta sound. The rest of the album is equally straight-forward. "Je N'en Connais Pas la Fin", one of the best songs in the band's career so far, starts with a straight beat until vocals burst in and then gradually gets heavier until the song ends. The song avoids cliche by staying loud the entire time with guitar parts shifting from picked riffs to start-stop powerchords to spacey lead lines to tremolo picking and finally to chugging, Meshuggah-esque riffing. "Revolve", another highlight, follows a similar structure and employs gang vocals in conjunction to pretty, shimmery riffing to create one of the album's most emotionally poignant moments. "Blue Day For Croatoa" is the lone exception to the straight-forward approach of the rest of the album, being a short ambient piece in the vein of "(Temet Nosce)". Almost all ADOM's tracks stay below the seven minute mark and it's perhaps fitting that the one that exceeds it is the album closer. "A Determinism of Morality" clocks in at almost eleven minutes, not a second of which is wasted. The album version is improved in every way from the demo version that has been floating around the internet for about six months now. The drumming is more crisp and dynamic, the guitars are more clear and defined and the vocals are even more in-your-face. As a demo, the song was already one of the best Rosetta tracks to date. Now, fully realised, in all its glory with added gang vocals, "A Determinism of Morality" is a defining song that condenses everything great about Rosetta into a single track.

For me, what makes Rosetta a great band is their ability to combine all of their instrumental tricks and techniques, their tightness as a band, and their fondness for major-key prettiness into big, loud, expansive, heavy pieces. Their music in its final form becomes a wholly visceral experience because of the meticulous forethought that goes into it. ADOM adds dimensions to that sound, making it hit even harder on a gut-level but also crafting it into a more dense, thoughtful experience. In its brevity and evolution, ADOM is Rosetta's best work to date.

THE GEROGERIGEGEGE - TOKYO ANAL DYNAMITE [1990]

"Either 40 minutes of absolutely unlistenable noise, or the greatest rock & roll record recorded -- or both. Tokyo Anal Dynamite is a live recording consisting of a frontman announcing a song (Japanese or Western rock classics), giving a count ("onetwothreefour!"), and then proceeding to explode into pure chaos -- the sound of 20 high-on-speed thrashcore bands falling down a flight of stairs, while being electrocuted along the way, only to land in barbed wire. It lasts a minute and after a slight pause, it starts again. And it repeats over 70 times. Checking the track listing won't help matters, for something like a Doors song comes out as "Raightomyfiyaaaonetwothreefour!," with the aforementioned minute of audio hell following. Juntaro Yamanouchi's noise experiment is rock music ad reductum, and probably his purest effort -- as well as his most stunning. Few things can match it." AMG

BEN FROST - BY THE THROAT [2009]

"The music Ben Frost is about contrast; influenced as much by Classical Minimalism as by Punk Rock and Metal, Frost’s throbbing guitar-based textures emerge from nothing and slowly coalesce into huge, forbidding forms that often eschew conventional structures in favor of the inevitable unfoldings of vast mechanical systems." WHITEHOUSE - DEDICATED TO PETER KURTEN, SADIST AND MASS SLAYER [1981]

"Aware of the new ground they broke with Erector, Whitehouse was quick to continue in a similar vein with Dedicated to Peter Kurten: Sadist and Mass Slayer. Instead of rehashing the dark meandering sounds from their previous release, they built upon that foundation with increased aggression and a better-formulated political philosophy. The barely tolerable extreme frequencies, that were quick becoming a Whitehouse trademark, are delivered like lightning bolts amidst the ten tracks on Dedicated to Peter Kurten. Evidence of the newly formulated sonic approach can be found in the reworking of previously released material, namely "The Second Coming" from Birthdeath Experience, "On Top" from Total Sex, and "Her Entry" from the Hoisting the Black Flag compilation. Each new version is ten times more aggressive and streamlined compared to the original. These new versions allow for drastic comparisons that illustrate how much the group progressed in their first two years of development. Each Whitehouse record attempts to make a unified conceptual statement, but none succeed quite like Dedicated to Peter Kurten, a record about the mind of serial killers. Each track cultivates terror in the listener by describing the impulses and thoughts of mass murders with horrid detail. Not for the faint of heart, but recommended for those interested in aggressive, shocking experimental noise." AMG

BORIS WITH MERZBOW - ROCK DREAM [2007]

"For starters, leave all expectations of what a(nother) collaboration between Boris and Merzbow might sound like, because Rock Dream is nothing like Sun Baked Snow Cave, which was released by Hydra Head in 2005. This limited-edition double CD (5,000 numbered copies) was recorded live in November of 2006 at Tokyo's Earthdom festival. Rather than a free-form improvisation drone and noise fest, it features Boris running through their own set with the mighty noise master (here known as Merzbow One Man) as an additional member of Boris, transforming the power trio into a quartet. The band runs through its set, or, rather plods and hammers through it, from the 35-plus-minute "Feedbacker" and "Black Out" to "Evil Stack" and "Rainbow" on disc one. Make no mistake, there's plenty of noise here. Boris have never backed away from the loud and proud; it's just that Merzbow's textural additions give the band's already loosely based tunes on disc one more power and presence. The fantastic sound quality makes every one of these nuances ring in crystal distorto-sonic. Evidence as to what actual Boris songs sound like -- which are more in evidence on disc two -- can be previewed in the smoking rendition of "Rainbow" that closes the initial CD, with Wata's spooky voice and freakout guitar solos contrasted with the otherwise subdued tune. Merzbow brings a shockingly primeval yet controlled power to that mix. For all of its improvisation and volume overload, "Feedbacker" itself is amazingly listenable and its melody distinct. When it comes to "Black Out," it gets rougher, and "Evil Stack" is simply too much for mere mortals.
But it's on disc two where everything really kicks into gear. "Pink" starts it off with a bang, and the band is in full throttle, rocking it to the rafters and beyond. Merzbow's complementary swathes of power electronics add so much to Wata's guitar and Atsuo's drumming is double and triple time, leaving Takeshi to hold this machine to the ground. "Woman on the Screen" is pure punk metal pyrotechnics, with drum whomp and bass and guitar scree poured through Merzbow's wildness -- in this short track he is totally unhinged. Think of Motörhead-accompanied power tools. As the band literally rages through "Nothing Special," "Ibitsu," and "A Bao a Qu" -- with lots of whoops and hollers to underscore this pure rock-out orgy -- the energy is unrelenting. The first 17 minutes of this disc are some of most intense in freak rock existence. Things slow a bit on "The Evileone Which Sobs," but only in tempo. It's still pure guitar, bass, and drum insanity and Merzbow ups the ante with enormous drones and a high-pitched swell that never goes above the higher end of Wata's guitar scream, keeping it all in some middle range of the doom zone. (Is she the hippest guitar player in rock or what?)
The greatest moment of the entire proceeding, though, has to be the off-the-rails version of "Just Abandoned My-self," which begins at about 95 mph, gets to 120 mph, and then heads further into the red-line zone without abandoning its RAWK crunch. When Wata cuts loose on the solo, Merzbow gives her the biggest hammering wall of absolute maximum power to play off of, matching pitch and texture without being tempted to take it over the ledge into chaos. It walks the tightrope for the entire proceeding without once hesitating or falling over into simple excess. Feeling like a showstopper, it turns out that Boris has one more in the can in an eight-minute version of "Farewell" that could make Sonic Youth at their best look on in disbelief and total envy. Indeed, it's almost as if Jimi Hendrix and his keen melodic sensibility were backed by Glenn Branca's multi-guitar orchestra, but it's all just Boris and Merzbow. When Wata lets herself go here, it's sublime; she climbs that monolithic pillar of racket and brings order to the chaos with her solo temporarily bringing it near the ground again before it just explodes for the finish. This is a breathtaking gig and more than anybody would have hoped for, or, based on past listening experience, had any reason to hope for. Indeed, Rock Dream is exactly that, and sends heavy music in 2007 off with a grand display of mercurial, majestic sludge and wail." AMG

BORIS WITH MICHIO KURIHARA - RAINBOW [2006]

"As longtime Boris fans can attest, you can always expect to be surprised by the Japanese trio. On the heels of Pink, the band's straightforwardly eager garage burner, a resurfaced Dronevil emerged, followed by Altar, their swirling/droning/drum-soloing collaboration with Sunn0))) and friends. Now Boris have thrown another curve ball with Rainbow, their collaboration with Michio Kurihara. The seminal psych guitarist played with PSF legends White Heaven, helped Damon & Naomi reach an apex, and continues shredding in Ghost. So, basically, the collection finds a few of Japan's most consistently face-melting, soul-stirring artists intersecting. They land near the late 1960s then continue onward, radiating a dusky Siltbreeze sound, Kurihara expanding Boris' reach with his gauzy, moody, fretwork.
Pink's just about always described as a rock'n'roll album (see above), but despite the critical frame, a certain strain of Jesu and Ride fans pointed toward the opener, "Farewell", as the album's sublime apex. If you're in that hanky-holding camp, Rainbow should be a treat: It not only revisits that shoegaze moment, but also includes lounge weirdness, toy-box balladry, and moody, stringed pyrotechnics. Throughout, the addition of Kurihara staggers: Opener "Rafflesia" takes what "Farewell" did so well, but pushes it even further, Kurihara managing to nail stars with hypnotic tone-benders.
There are other new sounds: Guitarist Wata handles vocals on the slinky title track. "Starship Narrator" takes off Siamese Dream-style, locating a bluesy guitar scorch before it dries out amid a flood of Can-loving amplifier worship. Continuing the haze in a gentler realm, a Loren Connors-esque guitar unwinds to full flutter on the moving, all too brief "My Rain", with tape-noise lapping up the dampness in the background.
The closest we come to Ghost's fathomless psych-folk is "Shine", its troubadour rattle eventually blooming into a somber, echo-chambered sound. There's a depth to the production here that's quite different from the upfront immediacy of Pink. Helping slightly to warm the vibe, "You Laughed Like a Water Mark" seduces downcast, stoner-friendly, monotone psychedelic rock: Kurihara's guitar steamrolls as the song continues its seven minutes, ending in a flurry, even as the rest of the band maintains a consistent doze. The hazy "Fuzzy Reactor" would've made an excellent finale: With its unidentified wind source and backward tape, it sounds like a retreat.
Inevitably, Boris keep pushing: "Sweet No. 1" closes this quiet-is-the-new-loud ramble with a rock dervish. It starts slow (much of it feels more like a strum exercise) before a stutter-step guitar strut. But this isn't Comets on Fire: It's burnt, damp, and saturated. Thing is, it also seems a bit unnecessary. And it's a solid track-- don't misunderstand-- but it comes across like a party crasher, drowning out the slow-release of what came before, only to return to the quiet toy-box mini-orchestra outro, "...And, I Want".
sick of Boris? It's easy to feel worn out amid the big-time magazine features, hectic release schedule, and endless touring (and, well, seemingly endless live sets-- sorry folks)? I was almost at the end of my own Boris rope, but Rainbow gave me a jolt, sounding a lot like something that would've set up camp on my turntable a dozen years ago when I memorized those Forced Exposure catalogues. It's vintage and totally invigorating. The immediate Pink punk-slap isn't here, but where the former nails one hue and keeps running with it, I can imagine this new, deeper set keeping me cozy for years to come. It's already eerily familiar." PITCHFORK

BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL- OUR LOVE WILL DESTROY THE WORLD [2006]

"Operating under the name Birchville Cat Motel for more than a decade, New Zealand's Campbell Kneale has mapped a formidable, boundless body of drone. Across the course of his innumerable available (and hopelessly unavailable) recordings, Kneale has crafted his various free-form creations with an uncommon patience and a painterly eye for detail, resulting in a catalog that veers dramatically from austere electronic flutter to ferocious scorched-earth noise.

Kneale's work has become increasingly guided by the pull of black/doom metal in recent years, as best exemplified by his sludgy productions as Black Boned Angel. This inclination is in glorious display on Our Love Will Destroy the World, a new Birchville full-length that inseparably marries Kneale's mile-deep electric drones and jacked-up Neu!/Hawkwind propulsion to create a gnarled, ridiculously savage heavy-psych juggernaut.

On many of Birchville's past albums, such as last year's exquisite With Maples Ablaze, Kneale has been joined by collaborators like Reynols, Dead C's Bruce Russell, and Lee Ranaldo. It's unclear, however, whether Kneale had any guests contribute to the multi-tracked ensemble din of Our Love. Despite its full-band assault the album advances with such a concentrated, beam-like focus that it sounds as though it might have been transmitted onto tape directly via one man's seething brainwaves.

Two of the five tracks here originally appeared on 2003's out-of-print Screamformelongbeach CD-R. Among the others is the centerpiece, the seismic, 16-minute riff-mantra "55,000 Flowers For the Hero", an Acid Mothers Temple-style piledriver whose emotive impact is somewhat akin to being overtaken by a swift-flowing river of molten asphalt. Incredibly dense with massed overtones of guitar and electronics, this track appears at once monolithic yet dazzlingly intricate in its drifting shadows, shedding excess layers as it very gradually melts away to a lone specter of amp distortion. Likewise, "Heaven's Flaming Horse" combines sawblade drones and turbulent grindcore rhythms to forge an insoluble, corrosive mass of charred flesh and spent wiring, reducing metal's flash and bombast down to an endlessly intense, solitary roar.

Following this barrage the melodic "Lay Thy Hatred Down" appears as an oasis of tranquility, the counterpoint of Kneale's sedate guitar and woodwind figures providing the listener a brief respite from the album's high-octane oblivion. The mysterious organ and doctored-tape drone of "Double Cascade Mini Fantasy" adds a welcome touch of gothic confusion; the set-closing title track is another tortured, color-saturated Sabbath riff, bombarded from all angles with random debris and piercing electronic wails. Less authoritative and hypnotic than the earlier "55,000 Flowers", this redundant finale comes as a slight letdown, though it is somewhat redeemed by its prolonged outro of vibrant, stray particles that careen about as if in desperate search for another unfathomable riff to ride. And judging by Kneale's overall productivity and obvious passion for Birchville's new, heavier direction, the guess here is the wait for that riff will not be long."

WOLF EYES - HUMAN ANIMAL [2006]

"Wolf Eyes began as a solo project of former Nautical Almanac member Nate Young, with Aaron Dilloway joining in 1999, and John Olson in 2000. During this time, the band also briefly relocated to New York City and at one point enlisted Andrew Wilkes-Krier, now known to the public as Andrew W.K.. The group is rumored to have released over 150 recordings in their relatively short lifespan, on labels such as Bulb Records, Troubleman Unlimited, Fusetron, and Sub Pop, as well as on Olson’s American Tapes label, Dilloway’s Hanson Records and, most recently, Mike Connelly’s Gods of Tundra label. Connelly (also of Hair Police) replaced Dilloway on tour in early 2005, due to the latter’s departure for Nepal to make arrangements for his marriage, but Dilloway still records with the original members.

Most Wolf Eyes recordings are self-released, following the DIY tradition of bands such as Smegma. Their first major release was Dread, released on the American Tapes and Hanson Records labels but distributed through Bulb Records. Other major releases include Dead Hills on Troubleman and Burned Mind on Sub Pop. Most Wolf Eyes recordings are released as either lathes, cassettes, or cd-rs.

Wolf Eyes’ first two major tours were with Sonic Youth and Andrew W.K." LAST.FM

LIGHTNING BOLT - EARTHLY DELIGHTS [2009]

"Lightning Bolt emerged from Providence, Rhode Island in 1995 as a three-piece art school project. Initially there was Brian Chippendale's explosive, non-stop drumming, Brian Gibson's Contortions-like bass lines, and Hisham Bharoocha's vocals propelling them in a fury of volatile noise and orgiastic tribalism. The group helped found Fort Thunder, a music and art collective, and recorded a self-titled album which was issued through Load in 1999. By 2001's Ride the Skies Bharoocha had departed (he eventually formed Black Dice.). This left the vocal duties to Chippendale, who jammed the microphone into his mouth as he drummed. Lightning Bolt did a series of tours with bands like The Locust, Arab on Radar, Orchid, and Melt Banana before returning in 2003 with the studio album Wonderful Rainbow. The album did very well in underground music circles, and set up the release of 2005's Hypermagic Mountain."
